No matter how much you have prepared yourself, and how many questions you are ready to answer once you are in the hot seat, try to prepare yourself for something unexpected.
If you are mentally prepared for something unexpected you will handle it much better than if you go in thinking you have everything covered and then get thrown a curve ball at the last minute.
Examples of unexpected curveballs are…
- Being asked an unexpected or perhaps even inappropriate question
- Being shown up for not knowing something, that perhaps you should for the job
- Spilling something – A good reason to say NO to that offer of a glass of water of coffee
- Bumping into something, or bumbling away when taking a seat.
These are only examples because remember when it happens its going to be unexpected and you are not going to be able to prepare for it. You can however expect the unexpected and at least know that it was going to happen so not to be to surprised and put off by it.
One good phrase to keep in mind, is if you do get asked an awkward or difficult question ask for a minute to think about and compose your answer. Any reasonable person is going to give you a little time, and asking for it is better than an awful silence while you attempt to gather your thoughts together.
