The world’s largest employers pay the wages of millions of workers every week. Imagine how costly a mistake could be if made by someone in the payroll department of one of these major employers!

We searched far and wide, and came up with this list of the worlds largest employers.

United States Department of Defence

With more than 3.2 million employees, the United States Department of Defence is not only the largest employer in the world, they have more staff than many countries have population!

People’s Liberation Army

Obviously keeping the peace is a booming industry. The People’s Liberation Army of China employs a whopping 2.3 million people.

Walmart

Walmart is the largest private employer in the world with over 2 million staff. As much as we like to laugh at the Walmart jokes that get emailed around, with 8,500 stores in 15 countries they certainly seem to be setting the benchmark when it comes to large retailers.

McDonalds

McDonalds has around 1.9 million staff. That includes franchises. They may not be the healthiest fast food restaurant out there, however they are the most popular.

National Health Service

The combined English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland publicly funded healthcare systems are known as the National Health Service (NHS). These are mainly funded via taxation and they provide a range of health services to the residents of the UK. NHS comes in at number 5 with around 1.7 million staff!

For those of us you who think your company is so big it treats you just like a number…spare a thought for the staff of these companies!
